Overview

Disney's DuckTales 2 is the highly anticipated and much rarer sequel to the beloved NES classic. The adventure begins when Scrooge McDuck's grand-nephew, Huey, discovers a piece of a torn map, which is said to lead to the legendary lost treasure of McDuck. Eager for a new fortune, Scrooge sets off on another globetrotting journey, from the Niagara Falls to the Bermuda Triangle, to find the remaining map pieces and uncover the ultimate prize.

Background

Released by Capcom in 1993, DuckTales 2 arrived very late in the lifespan of the Nintendo Entertainment System. By this time, the 16-bit era was in full swing, and the Super Nintendo had become the dominant console. As a result, the game had a significantly smaller print run than its predecessor, making it a prized and expensive item for retro game collectors today. Despite its late release, it's a technically impressive game that refines and expands upon the original's fantastic formula.

Gameplay

DuckTales 2 builds upon the solid foundation of the first game while adding several new and exciting mechanics. Scrooge's iconic pogo cane returns, but it can now be upgraded. By finding Gyro Gearloose in the levels, Scrooge can enhance his cane to break tougher blocks or to swing from hooks, allowing him to access new areas in a Metroidvania-like fashion. The game retains its non-linear structure, allowing players to tackle the stages in any order. The main goal is not only to complete the levels but also to find the hidden piece of the treasure map in each one. Finding all the map pieces before defeating the final boss is the only way to unlock the game's true ending, adding a significant layer of replayability and exploration.
