Overview

Samurai Shodown II is the legendary sequel that perfected the formula of its predecessor, creating one of the most beloved and respected fighting games ever made. The story takes place one year after the defeat of Amakusa, as a new, even greater threat emerges: the demonic priestess Mizuki Rashojin, who seeks to bring about an age of darkness. The game features an expanded roster of 15 unique combatants, including all twelve returning warriors from the first game plus four newcomers, such as the stoic veteran Genjuro Kibagami and the diminutive powerhouse Cham Cham.

Released by SNK in 1994 for the Neo Geo arcade system, Samurai Shodown II was a monumental achievement. It took the revolutionary weapon-based combat of the original and refined it to near perfection. The game was universally praised for its beautiful graphics, fluid animation, incredible soundtrack, and, most importantly, its deep and balanced gameplay. To this day, it is often cited by fans and critics as the high point of the entire Samurai Shodown series and a masterpiece of the 2D fighting game genre.

Gameplay

The gameplay of Samurai Shodown II enhances the tactical, high-damage combat of the original with a wealth of new mechanics. The Rage Gauge returns, but now it can be manually charged, though doing so leaves the player vulnerable. The biggest additions are the powerful "Weapon Smasher" super moves that can destroy an opponent's weapon for the remainder of the round. Character mobility is greatly improved with the addition of forward and backward hops, low dodges, and even the ability to "play dead" to fool an opponent. With a larger, more diverse cast and a deeper, more refined combat system, Samurai Shodown II offers an incredibly rich and rewarding fighting experience.
