Background

Developed by Game Freak, the studio that would later achieve worldwide fame with the Pokémon franchise, and published by Nintendo in 1991, Yoshi's Egg (or Mario & Yoshi in Europe) was a cleverly designed puzzle game that capitalized on the popularity of the Super Mario series. It provided a fun and engaging alternative to Tetris or other puzzle games of the era. Its simple yet addictive gameplay loop quickly made it a Game Boy favorite.

Gameplay

The gameplay in Yoshi's Egg is easy to learn but offers satisfying strategic depth. The playfield is divided into four vertical columns, and pairs of familiar Mario enemies fall from the top of the screen. The player, represented by Mario at the bottom, can swap the positions of any two adjacent stacks to align the falling enemies. Matching two of the same enemies causes them to disappear. The core objective is to clear the playfield by strategically matching the falling blocks. In addition to standard enemies, players must also manage falling eggshells. Trapping enemies inside upper and lower eggshells will cause them to hatch, resulting in valuable bonus points and a satisfying visual reward. The game ends when any of the four columns reach the top of the screen.
