Background

Released in 1991 for the Sega Game Gear, Ax Battler was designed to expand the lore of the Golden Axe universe on a handheld platform. It broke from the established genre to offer a different kind of experience, focusing on adventure and RPG mechanics that were popular at the time. By centering the story on one of the franchise's most recognizable heroes, Sega created a personal journey that gave players a new perspective on the world they had previously only fought through.

Gameplay

The gameplay in Ax Battler is divided into two main styles. The overworld is presented from a top-down perspective, where players explore towns, caves, and fields, interacting with NPCs and gathering information. When an enemy is encountered, the view shifts to a 2D side-scrolling plane for combat.
