Dragon Ball Z: Buyuu Retsuden - A Sega Mega Drive Fighting Classic

Dragon Ball Z: Buyuu Retsuden, known as Dragon Ball Z: L’Appel du Destin in France and Spain and simply Dragon Ball Z in Portugal, is a 1994 fighting game developed by Tose and published by Bandai and Ecofilmes for the Sega Mega Drive. The only Dragon Ball Z game for the platform, it covers the Frieza and Cell Sagas from Akira Toriyama’s anime and manga. Featuring 11 playable characters, it blends mechanics from Super Butouden and Super Butouden 2, with a three-button control scheme and split-screen combat. Released in Japan on April 1, 1994, and in Europe in June 1994, it sold well due to DBZ’s popularity but was never released in North America. Its vibrant 2D sprites and dynamic soundtrack make it a retro gem.

Why Play Dragon Ball Z: Buyuu Retsuden?

Buyuu Retsuden offers fast-paced one-on-one battles with a roster including Goku, Gohan, Piccolo, Vegeta, Future Trunks, Krillin, Android 18, Cell, Frieza, Captain Ginyu, and Recoome. Its split-screen mechanic, triggered when fighters move apart, enhances strategic depth, with a radar tracking positions. Players can fight on ground or air levels using a dedicated button, executing special moves like the Kamehameha via button combos. Though criticized for slower pacing compared to Street Fighter II, its unique characters (Krillin, Ginyu, Recoome exclusive to this game) and faithful DBZ feel make it a must-play for retro ROM and anime fans.
