Overview

Shinobi III: Return of the Ninja Master is widely regarded as the zenith of the classic Shinobi series and one of the finest action games on the Sega Genesis. Two years after the events of The Revenge of Shinobi, the Neo Zeed criminal syndicate has been secretly rebuilt by a new leader known only as the Shadow Master. Sensing their return, the legendary ninja Joe Musashi comes out of retirement for a final confrontation to destroy the evil organization once and for all.

Background

Released in 1993, Shinobi III was the culmination of Sega's experience developing action games for the Genesis. It took the foundation laid by its predecessors and polished every aspect to near perfection. The game is renowned for its incredible speed, fluid animation, highly responsive controls, and diverse level design. It represents a significant evolution from The Revenge of Shinobi, focusing on faster, more acrobatic gameplay that gave players an unprecedented sense of power and mobility as a ninja master.

Gameplay

The gameplay in Shinobi III is a masterclass in 2D action. Joe Musashi's moveset has been dramatically expanded, introducing a dedicated run button, a mid-air dash kick, a wall-to-wall jump, and the ability to grab onto ceilings. Combat is also refined, with a dedicated button for melee attacks (a sword slash or kick) separate from his shuriken throw. The four powerful ninjutsu spells return, giving Joe the ability to summon lightning, create pillars of fire, boost his defense, or sacrifice a life for a massive explosion. The game's stages are incredibly varied, taking players from traditional dojos and dark caverns to thrilling chase sequences on horseback and a high-speed surfboard, ensuring the action never gets repetitive.
