# Yoshi's Story
## Overview
*Yoshi's Story* is the charming and artistic follow-up to the Super Nintendo classic *Yoshi's Island*, bringing the beloved dinosaur's adventures into the 3D era of the Nintendo 64. The game unfolds within the pages of a pop-up storybook, where the idyllic life of the Yoshis is thrown into chaos when Baby Bowser steals the Super Happy Tree, casting a gloomy spell over the island. A group of newly hatched Baby Yoshis, immune to the sadness, set out on a quest to eat fruit, become happy, and defeat Baby Bowser to restore joy to their world.
## Background
Released for the Nintendo 64 in 1997, *Yoshi's Story* was a significant departure from its predecessor both visually and mechanically. Developed by Nintendo EAD, it was designed to showcase the N64's graphical capabilities in a unique way. Instead of pursuing realistic 3D environments, the team opted for a distinctive art style featuring pre-rendered 3D character models and rich, textured backgrounds that made the game look like a vibrant, interactive diorama or pop-up book. This creative direction gave *Yoshi's Story* a timeless and memorable aesthetic that set it apart from other titles on the console.
## Gameplay
*Yoshi's Story* is a 2.5D side-scrolling platformer with a unique objective. Rather than simply reaching the end of a stage, the goal is to fill Yoshi's "Smile Meter" by eating 30 pieces of fruit scattered throughout the level. The Smile Meter also serves as Yoshi's health; taking damage will make him less happy, and the level ends if it depletes completely. Players control one of several different colored Yoshis, each with a preference for a certain type of fruit. Eating a preferred fruit or a lucky Melon yields more happiness. Yoshi retains his classic moveset, including the flutter jump, ground pound, and his long tongue, which he uses to eat fruit, enemies, and turn them into throwable eggs. The game's structure is non-linear, allowing players to choose their path through the six "pages" of the storybook, offering high replayability to discover every level.
