Background

Released for the Nintendo 64 in 2001, Dr. Mario 64 was developed by Nintendo to bring its classic puzzle franchise to a new generation. While it arrived late in the N64's life cycle, it was praised for being a robust and feature-rich package that perfectly leveraged the console's four controller ports for chaotic multiplayer fun. The game later saw an enhanced re-release on the Nintendo GameCube as part of the Japan-exclusive Nintendo Puzzle Collection, which added GBA connectivity.

Gameplay

The core gameplay remains true to the original: players drop two-toned vitamin capsules into a bottle, rotating and arranging them to form lines of four or more matching colors to eliminate the viruses within. Where Dr. Mario 64 shines is in its wealth of new modes. The main Story Mode pits players against a series of opponents from the Wario Land 3 universe, each with their own unique AI. The game's main attraction, however, is its multiplayer. Up to four players can compete simultaneously in a classic Vs. battle, a 2-vs-2 Team Battle, or Flash mode, where the goal is to eliminate specific flashing viruses first. A Score Attack and Marathon mode round out the package, making Dr. Mario 64 the most content-rich and replayable version of the classic puzzle game.
