Retro Game: Final Fight 2

Overview

Final Fight 2 takes the brawl global in this action-packed sequel. The remnants of the Mad Gear Gang have regrouped and kidnapped Guy's fiancée, Rena, and her father (and Guy's former master), Genryusai. Mayor Mike Haggar receives the call for help and teams up with two new allies: Rena's younger sister, the nimble ninjutsu expert Maki Genryusai, and the powerful swordsman Carlos Miyamoto. The trio embarks on a worldwide manhunt, fighting through the streets of Hong Kong, France, Italy, and more to crush the Mad Gear Gang for good.

Background

Developed and published by Capcom exclusively for the Super Nintendo in 1993, Final Fight 2 was created to be the true home console sequel fans were waiting for. Most importantly, it addressed the biggest criticism of the SNES port of the original game by including a two-player cooperative mode right out of the box. It was designed from the ground up as a console experience, expanding the scope from a single city to an international adventure, offering new characters and diverse locations while retaining the hard-hitting action that made the original an arcade legend.

Gameplay

Final Fight 2 refines the classic side-scrolling beat 'em up formula. Players choose one of the three distinct fighters: Haggar, the slow but incredibly strong powerhouse; Maki, a fast and agile fighter similar to Guy from the first game; and Carlos, a well-balanced character who can use a sword for his special move. The game allows two players to fight side-by-side through six countries, each filled with waves of enemies and a formidable boss. The combat is satisfying and straightforward, featuring punch combos, jump kicks, grabs, and throws. Each character also has a unique special attack that can clear a crowd at the cost of a small amount of health, perfect for getting out of a tight spot.
