Retro Game: Pac & Pal

Overview

Pac & Pal is one of the most inventive and overlooked entries in the classic Pac-Man series. This arcade title shakes up the established formula by introducing a new objective and a brand-new character. Instead of eating dots, Pac-Man must flip over cards to unlock items scattered throughout the maze. He is joined by a friendly little green ghost named Miru (the "Pal"), who tries to help by collecting the items for him, creating a friendly but frantic race for points.

Background

Released by Namco in 1983, Pac & Pal was another of the company's official attempts to evolve the gameplay that had made the original a global phenomenon, following in the footsteps of Super Pac-Man. The game was primarily released in Japan and saw a very limited distribution elsewhere, making it a relative rarity in Western arcades. It is often confused with its alternate version, Pac-Man & Chomp Chomp, which replaced the Pal character with Pac-Man's dog. Due to its unique mechanics and scarcity, Pac & Pal remains a fascinating curiosity for retro gaming enthusiasts.

Gameplay

The gameplay in Pac & Pal departs significantly from the traditional dot-munching formula. The maze contains a series of face-down cards. Pac-Man must run over these cards to flip them, which unlocks a corresponding item (like a fruit or a Galaxian flagship) somewhere else in the maze. The goal is to eat all the unlocked items to clear the stage.

The "Pal" character, Miru, adds a unique dynamic. She periodically leaves the central pen and will attempt to grab any unlocked items and carry them back to the pen. While the player still gets points if she succeeds, they are worth significantly less than if Pac-Man eats them himself. This creates a fun tension where you are racing against your own friendly helper. Instead of relying solely on Power Pellets, Pac-Man can eat special items that allow him to shoot a beam or smoke cloud to temporarily stun the ghosts, giving him a new offensive capability.
