Overview

Shining Force: The Legacy of Great Intention is a landmark tactical role-playing game that tells a sprawling story of war, friendship, and courage. The player assumes the role of Max, a young swordsman in the Kingdom of Guardiana who is appointed leader of the "Shining Force." This small but diverse army is the kingdom's only hope against the aggressive forces of the evil empire of Runefaust, led by the mysterious Darksol. The quest will take the Shining Force across the entire continent on a mission to stop the darkness from consuming the world.

Background

Released for the Sega Genesis in 1992, Shining Force was the second entry in the Shining series but the first to establish the tactical RPG formula for which the franchise would become famous. It moved away from the first-person dungeon crawling of its predecessor, Shining in the Darkness, to create a more accessible yet strategically deep experience. The game was praised for its engaging character-driven narrative, colorful graphics, and for making the often-intimidating strategy RPG genre appealing to a wider console audience, cementing its place as an all-time classic.

Gameplay

The gameplay in Shining Force is divided into two distinct modes. Outside of combat, the game plays like a traditional top-down RPG. Players explore towns and castles, talk to NPCs to advance the story, manage their party members, and purchase new weapons and items. When a battle begins, the game transitions to a grid-based map. Combat is turn-based, with unit order determined by agility stats. Players strategically command each member of their force—from knights and archers to mages and birdmen—moving them across the battlefield and attacking enemy units. Characters gain experience for their actions, allowing them to level up, grow stronger, and eventually be promoted to more powerful classes.
