# Top Gear 3000: The Future of Racing
## Overview
*Top Gear 3000* launches the legendary racing series a millennium into the future, trading earthly highways for the desolate landscapes of alien planets. This ambitious sequel takes the core racing action and infuses it with a heavy dose of science fiction. Players compete in a high-stakes intergalactic championship, piloting advanced vehicles equipped with powerful weapons and warp drives. With branching paths and support for up to four players, it's the biggest and fastest entry in the classic trilogy.
## Background
Released in 1995, *Top Gear 3000* was the final installment of the series on the SNES and served as a technological showcase. To achieve its futuristic vision, the game cartridge included a special DSP-4 enhancement chip, which allowed for faster calculations and more complex track layouts than its predecessors. By shifting the setting dramatically from contemporary roads to sci-fi worlds, Kemco created a bold and memorable finale that pushed the boundaries of what was possible on the 16-bit console.
## Gameplay
The gameplay in *Top Gear 3000* retains the core upgrade system of its predecessor while adding exciting new mechanics. Players still earn cash to upgrade major components like the engine, gearbox, and tires. However, the biggest change is the introduction of "weapons." These are strategic abilities, such as a jump to clear obstacles, a magnetic attractor to pull you towards the car ahead, and a powerful warp drive for a massive burst of speed. Fuel and nitro management return, but now nitro is recharged by driving over special strips on the track. A key feature is the branching map; after certain races, players can choose which planet to travel to next, leading to different tracks and conditions and greatly enhancing replayability. The game is renowned for its multiplayer modes, supporting two players in split-screen natively and up to four players with the use of a multitap accessory.
