Blackthorne - A Gritty Cinematic Platformer Classic

Blackthorne (released as Blackhawk in some European countries) is a 1994 cinematic platformer developed by Blizzard Entertainment and published by Interplay Productions. Set on the planet Tuul, it follows Kyle "Blackthorne" Vlaros, a mercenary and heir to the Androth kingdom, who returns from Earth to defeat the evil Sarlac, who rules the Ka'dra'suul and enslaves the Androthi. Featuring 17 levels across four areas (Androth mines, Karrellian forests/swamps, Wasteland desert, Shadow Keep; Sega 32X adds a fifth snowy mountains area), players navigate maze-like environments, solve puzzles, and engage in gunfights using a pump-action shotgun. With smooth animations, a dark fantasy tone, and a soundtrack by Glenn Stafford, it was praised (Electronic Gaming Monthly: Game of the Month, GamePro: 4/5) for its visuals and action but noted for slow pacing. Re-released for free on Battle.net (2013) and in Blizzard Arcade Collection (2021, Switch/PS4/Xbox One/PC).

Why Play Blackthorne?

Blackthorne blends platforming, puzzle-solving, and gunfights, similar to Prince of Persia and Flashback, with Kyle running, climbing, and dodging bullets by pressing against walls. The unique ability to fire blindly backward adds flair. Players collect items like keys, hover bombs, and health potions, with Androthi allies upgrading the shotgun’s speed and power. Its 17 levels (2-4 hours main story, 5-8 for completion) offer challenging navigation and combat, with a password system for progress. The game’s dark aesthetic, detailed sprites, and moral choices (e.g., killing prisoners for items, censored in SNES/Japan) make it a standout for retro ROM fans, though complex controls and high difficulty may challenge newcomers. The 32X version’s extra area and pre-rendered sprites enhance the experience.
